Description
This is the first and oldest generation of the now-legendary Zeiss “Super Speed” lenses, commonly known as “B-Speeds”. Introduced in the 1970s, the original lenses were fitted with ARRI bayonet mounts. They share a lot of DNA with the later versions of the Super Speeds. Their incredible optics are made from “rare earth element glass” (which lens manufacturers are no longer allowed to use). Our set retains their original coatings and, arguably the most important, their original iris design.
What sets the B-Speeds apart from almost every other lens ever made is their unique 9-blade iris, which gives a triangular aperture with rounded sides. This iris design not only gives the lenses a softer focus, but also produces one of the most striking bokeh effects of any other lens. At full aperture, out-of-focus point light sources are rendered as round orbs. However, stop down to T2 and the circular orbs turn into rounded triangles. The B-Speeds give you several looks in the same set.
The flares are very pretty thanks to the vintage coatings. Shooting at wide aperture gives a beautiful, flattering look with a slight glow in the highlights. Stop down and the look becomes sharper and more contrasty.
